I am staying right now with my cousin and my son decided to sleep on the couch about 3 nights ago and he peed on the sofa....how can I get the smell out? I have tried using wintergreen alcohol and I have tried using distilled vinegar but the smell is still there does anyone have and suggestions for me?
Borax or Nature's Miracle both break down the acid in urine which is what causes the smell. The problem is that it probably soaked into the cushion. You can make a paste with water and Borax, agitate it into the stain, let it dry and vacuum it up, but if it is already in the batting of the cushion the smell will return over time. Nature's Miracle will probably work better in this case because it is a liquid and can soak into the cushion. I would suggest getting a steam cleaner and loading the Nature's Miracle in it or if you pour it into the stain, use a wet/dry vac to suck it up afterward. You can find Nature's Miracle at the discounters and pet stores.
Try using a new product called Urine Out or something like that and it comes with a little black light so you can see if the urine came out ,I think it's sold at Linens and things or Bed Bath and Beyond.
I had a problem with cat urine on my couch. After getting a pro to clean it and using my own concoctions, none of which worked, I ended up putting a plastic mattress cover over it and bought a nice Roots quilt to throw over it. No more smell. The smell was driving me mad. It was either try that or replace it.
The only way to remove urine odor is to use a product that has enzymes in it. The enzymes actually eat the bacteria causing urine and are safe and nontoxic. Vinegar and baking soda and all those other little tricks don't truly work for urine smells. The best place to find a urine cleaner is at a pet store and I have found the more expensive ones to be better. I buy SOX. I prefer this because you just soak (really soak) the smelly area and then leave it. When it is completely dry, you can vacuum the area. The enzymes will do all the work. Many other products have a soapy substance in it and leave a soapy film and then you are left trying to get all the soapy watery substance out. Because these soapy products are watered down, they don't work as good as the concentrated ones. I tried Urine B Gone, and it is a good product; however, I ordered mine over the telephone. I received the product a full six months later along. I had ordered 2 bottles and received only 1 but was charged for 2 on my credit card. Ended up paying about $68.00 (Canadian) for one little bottle. After many phone calls, I was able to trace the charge (with Visa's help) to Eagle Eye Marketing, but they didn't appear to have any address or phone number and I learned my lesson and will never order anything from television again. I am getting off topic here - in summary - go to a pet store and avoid buying the cheaper, soapier solutions.
Hi You will need to do a test on the fabric to see if you can clean it. Be careful with what product you uses. I would use “Nature's Miracle” this is a liquid containing enzymes that feed on the organisms that give urine its odours. You can buy it at Petsmart. First you will need to do is a test. To do the test spray the cleaner, using the back edge of the cushion spray a spot about the size of a quarter and wipe it with a white towel and let it dry on it’s own. If you get colour transfer onto the towel it is not safe to clean. If there is no change in colour and no watermark then it is safe to clean or spot clean. If there is a watermark but no colour change it is safe to clean only thing is you will need to clean the whole thing. (to stop watermarks) you can not spot clean. If you decide to clean it DO NOT do a lot of scrubbing on the fabric because you can cause damage to the fabric. If you decide to spot clean only you can use a hair dryer to speed up the drying (less chance of leaving a watermark). If you clean the whole sofa you are probably best to set up a fan to help dry the sofa. Hope this helps Carpet cleaner for 14 years
