Question:

How could i get my horse used to rugs?

ive got a 3 year old welsh cob and he takes his rugs off because he don't like them but i want to know how i could get him used to them.idea's?Thanks

Answer:

Here is my trick to training horses to use rugs... Step 1- Tie him up to cross ties and make sure that his hind quarters are not near any horses. I say this because if he gets scared and backs up, a horse may bite him, if they are protective of their space, or just don't like other horses. Step 2- Fold the rug in half and slowly and gently place it on his back. Step 3- Give the horse a treat and praise him. Step 4- Begin to unfold the blanket, slowly, and make sure that it is in the right place on his back. Praise him. Step 5- Begin to SLOWLY do one of the straps. Wait a moment and do one more. Stroke theb horse on his shoulder and finish slowly fastening the straps and praising the horse. Step 6- When the rug is on properly, let the horse stand in one place and get used to having something new on his back. Step 6- After about 5-10 minutes, lead the horse around slowly and be ready to let go of the lead rope if the horse suddenly freaks out. Remember to always praise the horse and take it SLOOOW. Good luck! :))

Leave the rug by him in the stable. When he's used to it you can start putting it on him. Leave it on for a minute when he's tied up outside and then increase the amount of time until he's wearing it for a long time. If he takes it off because it's uncomfortable, you could try getting a different style of rug or a lighter one if it's too hot. Hope this helps!

A few years ago, (in her stall overnight) my horse has managed to take her blanket off and it was laying on the ground with all of the buckles, 2 criss-cross surcingles 2 elastic legs straps still buckled/ in tact. The blanket fit her good wasn't too loose. I still wonder how she did that...LOL. Magic mare? Now I always buy closed front blankets/rugs without any buckles (need to put over the horses head) haven't had any problems.

a great number of horses sweat interior the trailer because it is. If the trailer has extra desirable open vents for rain to get at him by using you may desire to place that water-resistant sheet on him. If that's closed up for the main section leave the blankets off with the aid of fact he gets sweaty after which you may ought to stress approximately chills.

It could be that he is to hot but some horses will do this. I use a rug with leg straps as well as cross straps and, spray with liquid cribbox.
