Question:

How did Society react to Scientific advances in the 19th Century?

I am doing a paper on how Scientific advances influenced the public and the writer of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr HydeI just need some basic information as to how the public reacted and how this may have influenced StevensonAny help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:

They were totally ignorant of scientific advancements; but they were fascinated with advancements in technology, particularly large machines and large structures (buildings, bridges, tunnels, etc.) They were only obliquely interested in chemistry when new advancements made color dyes cheaply available and then it became a very colorful world with the people painting practically everything in colors and wearing the most outrageously colored dress.
In both cases you get a poorly soluble compound ( Mg(OH)2 and Al(OH)3 ) that forms a somewhat gelatinous white precipitate.
