Question:

How do I convert a computer fan with 4pin power connector to a regular 3-pin fan header?

I have a 120mm computer fan which doesn't have a regular fan header instead it takes in a 4 pin power connector directly from the power supply. How can I convert a 4 pin power connector into a regular 3 pin fan header. I have extra parts from broken fans and extra 4 pin power connectors so I can easily solder some stuff up, or if a adapter exists what is it called?

Answer:

u dont need an adapter it will run fine with the extra pin hanging off
Not sure exactly what it is called. You will want to look at case accessories, fans, and cables. These usually come with a new fan. Link below to shop. Hope it helps.
Well, if you want to do it manually, all you really need is the hot and the ground wire. The third wire is used as the fan controller. So if you have some extra wire there as you said and some connectors already, all you need is an electornic soldering iron and some solder and little bit of electrical tape. -----------------Red Wire (+) HOT -----------------Yellow Wire - Fan controller -----------------Black Wire (-) Ground Make sure you check your motherboard manual for the cpu fan connector + and - terminals. So long as you have the plus and minus terminals correct, then the fan controller wire is a no-brainer. Or, if you wish, you can just leave the yellow fan controller wire out and let the fan run at maximum speed all the time. If you have a good case fan with dual ball bearings, you need not worry about wearing the ball bearings out fast and getting a lot of racket or noise coming from the fan moving at maybe 4500 RPM. You could also get a molex connector from an old power supply and pull one of the wires out, there is are two blacks, a yellow and a red. All you really need is one black, one yellow and one red. If you know how to solder the rest is easy. Just get the plus and minus terminals correct.
there is an adapter. i don't know how is it called. maybe 4pin to 3pin fan connector
Clip the yellow wire, it's a return signal lead that tells the computer that the fan on the heatsink is working. You need the red, black, and white!
