Question:

how do I finish the carpet up against tile?

I am tiling then want to butt the carpet up against it. How do I do that?

Answer:

Your looking for a metal strip called a Z bar. The carpet tucks into it and then you hammer it down. Will give you a good edge without the chance of frayed carpet edges.
You'll just need a metal transition strip. This gets tacked down over the edge of the carpet and up against or on top of the tile edge. You can get these at any carpet or flooring store or home center. They are available in several sizes and colors, but you may have to cut these to your exact length. You can also do wooden transition strips, but the metal ones are easier to install and more durable.
If you are using stretch carpet, nail a tack strip to the floor about 1/2 back from the tile, cut the carpet to the tile, then stretch it over the tack strip and fold it down along the tile. Another option is to use a transition strip. There are many different styles to choose from, in metal, wood, marble, etc. Hope this helps.
All depends on what you needed for a substrate and how high the tile is and carpet type. If the tile was put on a 1/2 backer board. you ll have to double the carpet up by folding it up and back under itself. This is called a turn and tack. Some times a pad thickness ir enough. Occasionally you need 2 tack strips to get the carpet to cover the tile edge, If your over cement it will depend if the carpet is glued down or over a pad. Metals over the edge look tacky and cheap. There is no one answer with out knowing what you ve had to do to tile. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL
Use threshhold Its little metal or wooden strips that come in various lengths and can be purchased at home depot, lowes or any local hardware store. just go in and ask them for threshold and they will know what your looking for.
