Question:

How do I purify Quartz powder?

I have a jar of Quarts powder I crushed from raw Quartz. The impurity level is not too high, but I want to make it close to 97-98% pure. I was thinking of using acid, but did not know the complications of doing this. Any help would be great, thanks...

Answer:

To test my gray-white, marble-looking quartz sink sample before buying, I used permanent marker on it. Salesman could not get it off with all suggested methods. I took out my discount beauty shop bottle of acetone (cheap) and with a cotton pad, whisked it clean with a touch. Quartz is non porous, granite is porous. Also with quartz, it doesn't allow bacteria to grow, which is important with a family.
It can crack. Taking care of it is a headache. Any food coloring or dye can leave color in the sink and it can look ugly over time. Tumeric - if you use even some of it - will impart a yellow color. You may lose the good looks. It goes rough due to pitting, again caused by hard water or high temperature water standing there for anylength of time. Depending on the pattern, it is hard to tell if it is clean. May be it is a plus, lol. It is expensive of course. My motto: KISS. Keep it simple silly.
Pros? It is very pretty... Cons? Quartz is a porous stone and so you will need to re-seal it every so often and make sure not to slam stuff and scrape things around it. If you don't then it may stain. Pro? Value wise, it is worth it because it increases the value of the kitchen and therefore the home because Quartz is In right now. Con? If it Goes Out Of Style or the colors change when you want to sell the house, the value is lost. Um... Over all... I would say get it if you think it looks nice and you have done your research in to how to properly care for it... I think they look VERY nice!! (Especially if they are Under Set and recessed into the counter area so it is flat and 'hangs') but I wouldn't get it for MY house because I couldnt' deal with the care and cleaning of it.
