There are different styles of faucet. There may be one projection or three (or four.) You would have to go back a very long way for the thing to be screwed down from the top. Usually there is from one to four "nuts" that hold the faucet down to the sink top. You are going to have to crawl under the sink to see and loosen them. It is an good place to start anyway as you are going to have to see if you can turn the water off under the sink or have to turn the house off instead. Once the water is turned off, disconnect the supply tubes and then loosen the nuts and remove the faucet from above. Most of the modern nuts are plastic but older ones may be rusted and difficult to remove. Sometimes a basin wrench can help and at least once I had to cut the faucet off with a sawzaw after removing the countertop.
