I have a cable that has a 9-pin serial end and a 35mm headphone jack end. What is the purpose of this cable or what would it have be used for? Thanks for you help.

A 9 pin d-sub end indicates that it's a data cable as to it's exact usage that can vary sounds to me like an accessory cable for a camera with gps capability like a Nikon D300 D700 or some diagnostic equipment cable possibly but you cant be certain if nothing else take an image load it to photo bucket and link it to your question for a positive ID.
