I have a small leak on a 3 copper drain pipe. The leak is on a collar. Is there anyway I can repair this leak without taking it apart and sweating the joint? Thanks for your help
Dont use glues, tapes or epoxy, it will only cause problems later on. You may not have to take the joint apart just reheat it using tinning flux and a touch of fresh solder. Repair should take about 3 minutes. Good luck. ( tinning flux contains a bit of powdered solder and doesnt run off as fast as regular flux, its recommended for larger diameter pipe.
You can get special fittings that have an O ring seal to a smooth cut pipe. Cut the compression ring off, smooth the end of the pipe with a file, then use one of these O ring - type fittings. They need minimal run-out from the wall, but check your local building codes to see if they are legal for you. Or you could try epoxy paste as a sealer. It might leak again after a few years, but at least it won't blow off the pipe altogether.
A compression ring is intended for one-time use. Trying to reuse one is only asking for leaks. The only way to remove them is to cut the tubing.
Dry and clean the spot. Sanding it would help. Then apply J B Weld. It takes time to set up - it's a type of epoxy, so do not run water through the pipe until it is completely cured. On the other hand, you could try sweating the joint without taking it apart. It could work if it it clean enough and you use flux.
copper drain? replace it with PVC.
