My rug is a short, runner rug in front of our outside doorway. The material is shaggy and I'm not sure if I can put in the washer...?
it should be okay to put in the washer, but i wouldnt put it into the dryer in case it might fray in the dryer. i would wash in cold water, then hang or lay out to dry.
What backing is on the rug? What were the cleaning instructions when you bought it? If you put it in the washer, use a gentle cycle. Is there a tag on the back of it or can you go back to the store where you bought it and look at the cleaning instructions on the unsold rugs? If it's too bulky for your washer, soap it up on the driveway and rinse it with the water hose.
If you really like the rug and want to be sure you don't ruin it in the machine, you could wash it in the bathtub or outside using a hose and your favorite brand of rug cleaner. Either way would be a bit messy, but your rug would not get torn up by a machine.
