The name can be deduced from its formula SiO2 - it is silicon dioxide. It weathers to fine sand. The colours are due to the many types of impurity quartz may contain. It is used for oscillators in time keeping and frequency control for radio and radar etc. also as bearings on items such as balances. It is found in a vast range of rocks as it is so common. Quartz grains are hard and sharp so make a good abrasive, it is also cheap. Hope that helps a little.
