How do you competely shut a leaking faucet?

Answer:

You are going to have to change the washer in it (inside on the end of the stem) or the washer on the handle (inside the nut below the handle). You will need to shut off the water and use a wrench to remove the stem and bring it into a store like Home Depot to get a matching replacement for the warn out parts. If the dripping is driving you crazy right now you can shut off the valve under the sink or basin as a temporary measure. If it is on an outside hose you can get a cap to put over it. In the long run you will need to replace the warn out parts. It is simple and will last for years.
No my faucet is not leaking and nor has it been leaking. But now my toilet does run all the time. No it is not the same problem that CJ is having either. I wish mine was that simple, I would have already had it fixed by now if that was the case. Mine is in my travel trailer that I live in.
I'm not a plumber, but I think if you want to completely shut a leaking faucet, you have to make sure that the faucet is screwed on real good.....if it still leaks....then the screws are stripped, and you will need NEW screws for your faucet.....or you will need a NEW faucet....one or the other.
There will be a shutoff valve under the sink for this purpose. You will also have the chance to replace the washer that is causing the faucet to leak when the water is shutoff. You will under most applications need to remove the handle that turns off the water then you can take out what is called the stem. The stem will have a rubber piece on it.This rubber piece is what to replace.
There should be a supply valve under the sink,if not you will have to shut off the home supply valve. If its on the hot side you can shut the cold water supply to the water heater but always turn off the power to the heater when you do this. At this point make repairs to the faucet some thing is making it leak?
