Are you sure that the employee handbook is describing the situation in regards to a person on probation? Normally, a 2 step process for firing would only be applicable for a permanent employee. Regardless, you ultimately wanted to work for them more than they wanted you to continue working. Until you get a job where you have history and security, you must understand the importance of the probationary period. It may not seem fair, but if you force their hand in any way during that probationary period, you simply are opening yourself up to this exact situation. There are people out there that have kids but have plans in place for emergencies. Next time, do whatever you can to avoid that. If that is truly not possible, realize that it may take you a little longer to find a job that will accommodate you and your needs. In this day and time, companies are looking for people that are willing to adjust their schedules as needed to work for them.
call a friend and ask if you can sleep over? Call the company that makes the alarms and tell them you might have a faulty one. You can get the number probably from one of the other alarms you should have in your house. Good Luck
