They are still using copper where I live in Arkansas for propane lines underground (even new services). Even if your code changed, you should not be required to change it unless you do work on the line such as a repair or moving it to another area. Called grandfathering. Code for underground black iron pipe would include welding all joints and having a coating on it.
You cant get actual curls. But you can get a slit bend at the ends a little so they arent straight. What you do is when you get to the ends of your hair turn you flat iron like you would with a curling iron and you will get a little flip. You can flip it up or back.

Try flipping it like you are, and putting some hair spray right before and right after, and it might hold up better. For a real curl, just go spend like $10 or $20 somewhere like Target, or Walgreens, etc for a curling iron, which will be better.
