Question:

How do you find out what plants you have in your new garden?

I've just moved to a house with a nice back yard, with all kinds of plants and trees in it, but I have no idea how to figure out which plants or trees they are. I'd like to know how to take care of them in the best way, but I'd need to know what they are first.

Answer:

Haven't you met your neighbors? Someone in your neighborhood is going to be an expert gardener.
Take a picture of the plant and upload it to your computer, then use google's search by picture option (I think you can just drag the image into the search bar)
Often the people who work in your local nursery or garden center are happy to ID samples of your plants. Bring in a branch from each plant (more than a single leaf is best), and they can tell you what they all are.
That is cool that you moved into a place that is already landscaped. All of my new houses have been all grass and it is a lot of work and money to put in a garden. It's fun, but still a lot of work. First thing I would do is get a good gardening book that you can search for the plants and trees that you have in your garden. I have a copy of the Better Homes and Gardens Complete Guide to Gardening ISBN number: 0-696-00041-5. The book has photos, descriptions and information on how to care for them. I'm sure there are newer books, but this is a good example. Once you go through the book if there are any plants or trees that you can not identify, I would take photos and then take them to a good local garden store and see if they can help you out. You can also look at attending any local garden shows or events. They usually have gardeners with a lot of knowledge and are happy to help out. For really good local knowledge in my area I visit Darts Hill Garden: www.dartshill.ca/
Ask the county agent to help you with that .
