my safety course says for certain emergency situations to flash your brake light (motorcycle).how exactly does one ‘flash‘ your brake lights?
Most of the time, one most bikes, a light touch on the rear brake pedal will activate the brake light before it makes the brake take hold. You can use that as a 'flash' signal. (In a situation where you'd want to 'flash' you're probably slowing down anyway. - I once had to use it for an engine failure on a highway. - Might have saved my bacon.)
Most use the rear pedal. Just a light tap to flash the light without actually putting pressure on the brakes. My older bikes with drum brakes had an adjustable switch. Mine was purposely set so the lamp lit before the brake engaged. It's harder to do with hydraulic brakes, but it's still done. Not liking the way my brakes and lights work together on the hydraulic disc brake on my current ride, I use the front brake lever. Just a twitch to lift the lever off the switch pin, not enough to make the brake grab.
On a motorcycle you want to tap the rear brake. don't put pressure on in just tap it with your toe, each time you tap your brake light will go on and off with each tap. This will help get peoples attention that there is a hazard ahead and you may be slowing down quickly or manuvering. Always signal your intentions and be safe out there! happy and safe riding.
