it is 1 in the morning and i can't sleep because the thick smell of smokewe have a fire place and the chimney is openthe fire has been burning all day and the smell didn't start until an hour agowe usually have a smoke smell but not this heavythere are cracks in the back of the fireplace and we have burned unseasoned wood latelyit is too cold to open the windows to air out the houseeveryone else is sleeping and i don't want to wake them with no reasonbut i don't want them to die from CO poisoningHELP! pleaseif you know anything i'll be thankfulit could save lifes

Visit your local fire department to learn a bit about fire alarms and maybe fire sprinklers. They will not have much in depth knowledge about fire alarms, but should have some literature on both. No matter what else you are told, you might stress the superiority of photoelectric-type smoke detectors and smoke alarms, over the ionization type. This is because they are less false alarm prone, and do a better job of detecting smoldering fires. It Will be a bit moire difficult to get helpful information on burglar alarms. Look up burglar alarms on the Internet, and learn what you can from the listings there.
You have a loose wire- Take it to your local fire deptment and they may be able to fix it or give you another one.
