Question:

How does a free flow exhaust system work.?

I own a 150cc bike, and I am looking at ways by which I could increase the pick up without tinkering too much with the engine.I am considering using a free flow exhaust system, but I am still not very clear about how it workswhat would you recommend?Thank youPS: I understand that a 150cc bike is not mean‘t to be a power monsterbut I‘m sorta sentimentally attached to this bike, so I don‘t want to buy a new one

Answer:

Pilgrim has absolutely nailed this answer down. And it my case it was pure passion. I ate, slept and breathed choppers and, now that my knees are shot and I really can't ride much any more, I still eat, sleep and breathe choppers. I started with a 1400 Intruder and made the chopper of my dreams. The rest is history. When the right ride comes along, you'll know it or you'll build it. Live to Ride, Ride to Live
the gxsr is a great bike but still a lot for a newbie find a race track most will offer some kind of riding get some riding class experiance before you hit the streets
It SHOULD improve power. It may improve efficiency slightly and you will notice the engine spools up faster than it did before and it might run a bit cooler, but this won't be noticeable from the driver's seat. I say should because there are a lot of other factors in the engine's performance that are not addressed by the exhaust.
Free Flow Exhaust System
A free flow exhaust system is one that has little or no back pressure, which should theoretically provide higher horsepower numbers at high rpm's. The problem is that you lose the back pressure needed to produce torque at lower and mid range rpm's. You can also create a lean condition caused by the exhaust over-scavenging the intake mixture, usually indicated by a backfire in the exhaust during deceleration. If you're interested in making it a little quicker from a stop, then you might want to consider finding a rear sprocket with more teeth. If you'd like it to have a higher top speed or passing ability, then change the exhaust.
