Question:

how expensive is it to install carpet?

we are looking to sell our house soon, and need to replace the carpet. the estimates we are getting are 8,000 minimum.we just want something new, looks good and will last at least 10 years and affordable.am i dreaming when i hope to have it done, materials and labor, cost no more than $2000?

Answer:

I have successfully replaced carpet at far below retail quotes by purchasing what is called seconds. Depending upon your location, look for a carpet store in your area that is the largest wholesale store. Call them and express your need to obtain x sq ft of carpet at the lowest possible price. If you get an invitation to come look and see what they have that will sell in your price point. Go, they are in possession of at least a few choices for you. I don't know the sq ft of your home, so I have no idea if 2K is just a dream or could be a reality. Best of luck
If your putting it in just to sell it, why do you care if it lasts 10 years or not? Materials and labor for under 2000 may be a stretch, especially if you have a large area you want to carpet. If I were you, I would look into carpets that are not as expensive. The people who buy the house may not even like the carpet and rip it out and put hardward or a different color anyway, so lasting 10 years should not be a concern. That is a big part of your expense right there!
Carpet comes in 12' widths with some Berber carpets and others available in 15' widths. Carpet needs to run the same way when it connects to adjacent rooms to avoid cross graining the carpet. That doesn't allow for nice seams. A carpeting contractor would measure to see how many yards of carpet would be needed to correctly install, calculating waste, etc. Without waste being factored, an area is divided by 9 square feet per yard of carpet. 10% waste is typical but it does vary from house to house. Thus, 1700 x 1% = 1870 / 9 = 207.77. Carpet installed will vary in price but $20 here in Texas is a generous amount, so 207.77 x $20 = $4155.55 plus applicable taxes. If you're selling the house, go with a neutral color that appeals to many buyers and goes with many wall colors they might select.
