Question:

How is a ceramic tile bread warmer safely heated?

How is a ceramic tile bread warmer safely heated? Will it crack if it gets too hot? What are the best methods of heating one? Thanks!

Answer:

Pottery, or ceramics, is affected by thermal shock. Because it has already been fired to a much higher temperature than your oven goes to, you can heat it without worry of it breaking. But going from really cold to hot, or hot to cold, fast could make it crack or break from the shock. The best way is to put the tile in a cool oven and heat it up gradually to warm. When you take it out of the oven do not put it on a cold counter because that will shock it. You can then put it in your bread basket.
