Iron ore is in the form of iron oxides. In order to get pure iron, you need to remove the oxygen. This is traditionally done by heating the ore in the presence of carbon monoxide. The carbon monoxide reacts with the oxygen in the ore to form carbon dioxide, leaving free iron behind.
