Question:

How much does a car alarm cost?

Basically, I thought if I install a car alarm to my car, I can knock the insurance premium down a bit. Does anyone have any recommendations? I have a 2002 Renault Laguna, and I‘m looking to spend as less as possible. Let‘s just say I get paid about ?5 an hour, so I can‘t really afford anything major.

Answer:

If you are handy with a soldering iron and can work on your car's electrical system, you should be able to buy a kit from an electronics shop and put something together real cheap. There are alarm kits for cars that work on the voltage drop concept. Basically, the kit and the alarm gets connected to the supply voltage of your car's electrical system. When you are leaving your car, you arm the system which gives you 20 seconds to exit the car. Once this time is passed, the system monitors the voltage on the lines and sounds the alarm once a voltage drop is detected. The idea is if someone opens the car door, the internal light turning on will be enough to trip the alarm that sounds the siren inside the car. Since the siren is very loud, it makes it very hard to hide the fact that the car is stolen and in makes being inside the car very uncomfortable. Hope this helps.
