Question:

How much insulation is enough for Snowboarding?

Hi im new to snowboardingi live in Oregon so temperatures usually get down to around 15 or lower in the evening on the mountainI am having a hard time understanding insulation and how to pick the best outerwear for myselfright now i have a volcom jacket- 80g insulation rated at 10,000 waterproofingim just wondering, is that going to be warm enough for me? i have wool under garments but i get so cold im not sure how much insulation i should have in my jacketi know you can get anywhere from 60-200, but i really like the one i have nowso can anybody tell me if i should be warm enough in it? is there a chart i could look at somewhere that would give the temperature rating and how much insulation you would need in them? thank you!

Answer:

yesrats can chew through anything but steel or steel wool
yes they can but theyre likely to go through the pipes
uh, I've found mice in the weirdest places that you would think they couldn't get to, so i think they could get to your place.
At our mountain the temps range from 0 to 50At 40+ degrees I wear a t-shirt and my outer layer waterproof jacketAt 20-40 I add an underarmor-style long sleeve shirt or a smaller jacketAt 0-20 I wear all of it; waterproof jacket, smaller jacket, t-shirt, and underarmor shirtFor pantsAt 40+ I wear gym shorts then the waterproof pantsAt 20-40 I add either underarmor-style pants or jeansAt 0-20 I wear all of it; waterproof pants, jeans, gym shorts, underarmor pantsI have never been cold doing this, but I sometimes get hotIf so, I just open my vents and I'm fineBy the way, you definitely don't need to buy another jacketLike my examples, you just need to use layersI have absolutely no idea how much insulation my jacket hasI just bought it as a waterproof jacket and that's really all I was worried aboutAbout waterproof/breathability ratingsThese range from about 5,000 to 30,000, with 30,000 being the bestFor most snow sports gear, it ranges from 5k to 20k thoughFor wet snow you can wear 5k as long as you don't sit in the snow for a long timeAnything colder, and 5k will do just fine10,000 is a good all around number to look forAlso, breathabilitylook for at least 5k, preferably 10k+ Make sure the clothing you have has ventsit helps if you happen to over-layer or the temp rises a lot.
