Question:

How risky is it to have the pipes that lead from an oil tank to the oil burner run under the ground?

I bought a home over a year ago and we use oil heat. The lines that run from the tank to the burner run under the basement floor, which is cement. Recently, the company that we purchase our oil from and also maintains our equipment strongly suggested that we replace the underground lines with above ground ones. They mentioned that it is a high risk to have the underground lines in case of leakage. I know to have this done would cost a good deal of money, and I‘m just wondering if the risk is as significant as they are saying, or if this is more of a sales ploy than anything else. I‘ve worked in the sales industry, and I can‘t help but think this could be the case. Anyone with any advice on this would be greatly appreciated!!

Answer:

they are probably copper pipes under the slab. they can last up to 80 years or so in the dirt.however where they come in contact with the cement it will cut that time nearly in half funny thing is when we used to run new copper oil lines around the basement ( theres usually 2 small copper lines) we would tuck them in the corner where the walls meet the floor.then mix some cement and form the cement on an angle. so the pipes werent exposed and become a trip hazard. that is common practice in the north east.when and if the pipes under the slab do give out the oil burner will start to run sparadically(sukin air) so unless it is doing that i would leave it alone
