Question:

How should I make a commutator and where do I find the required components?

I am making a electric DC motor for a school project and I am confused on how to make the commutator part of it. I am also stuck on where to get the components from. Thanks for any help.

Answer:

Have you ever seen a survival blanket? I had one in my sailboat for many years and I am considering buying one for the first-aid of my little aircraft. It has one side covered by aluminum foil. The intersting thing is that, many think that it is the side to be on the outside. It is not. You should have it on the inside, in order to reflect the heat of your body. In the Norwegian winter, I also have inside soles in my shoes. One side is aluminum foil and that is the side that must be towards your feet. Wool is special in that, that it is still warm when moist. If you get very wet at sea, go in bed, under a blanket, but keep your wet wool clothes on you and you will feel that it warms up. Actually, Norwegian fishermen use wool mittens and keep them on even when working in the sea water. So, the best way to keep warm during the winter is a layer of aluminum foil over wool. Perhaps you'd like cotton first, directly on the skin, because wool can be itchy. But wool and anything that reflects the infrared heat body, are your friends! ;-)
For a home made commutator you can take a 1inch diameter wood dowel and smash the ends of your coil wires with a hammer and then glue them down to the wood dowel. Difficult to do.
Usually it is not the fabric, wool is an exception, but the material inbetween the fabric. The insulation is where you need to do researcxh.
