Do you use tap water? If so, have you tested it before putting it in the tank and what is the pH? If the pH is high, this usually means it has high mineral content which can keep your ph high. If you use bottled, distilled or purified water, your pH will probably be out of control or very low. Don't use the pH upThis causes it to rise for a few hours and then it goes back right to where it was before which can harm your fishies Check out the link.Coral sounds like a good idea too, but get back to me about the water. :-) EDIT: Okay, since the pH in your tap water isn't high then keep using the tap water, but I would suggest using the coral to raise the levels.
Try putting some crushed coral in your filter. What substrate do you have? Most African Cichlid substrate should raise the pH.
