Question:

how to change transmission fluid in 2000 volvo 240?

cant find a reasonable shop to get it serviced. is it difficult to change the transmission fluid in a 240 volvo

Answer:

You don't!! The transmission is sealed with a sealant not a gasket. There is no drain plug to drain it either! There are a few transmission shops that can service it but not many. The transmission also uses a different fluid that Volvo says you have to use but I use Dextron III in mine as it is also for Volvo's. You transmission is a very weak point of your S80 so make damn sure you have it done right, either way! I bought a 2nd overhauled transmission for my '00 S80T6 and found it has a problem after installing it and had to have the original one overhauled. $2000 later, transmission is back in and so far it's okay, expect now Volvo is telling me it is leaking at the input seal because the input shaft is too short. It was replaced with an OEM shaft the same length so I am having a hard time believing that!
No it isn't difficult to change the transmission fluid. All you need to do is find the drain plug on the transmission pan and unscrew it as if it were the engine oil drain plug. So back to the story, remove the drain plug and let the fluid drain out, then unbolt the pan buy removing the 10-15 or so pan bolts around the edge. The gasket may be a little stuck so a gentle pry will work the remove carefully with plenty of towels around. When the pan is off and out of the way you can now change the transmission filter. The filter is normally bolted with 3-4 bolts from the bottom, using the new transmission filter will help you locate the old filter and the bolt location. The bolts are small so don't over tighten when reassembling. Pan is pretty straight forward when going back on with a new gasket. Be sure when refilling the transmission you have the correct type of transmission fluid. Fill the fluid through the dipstick hole with a small funnel and when the fluid level gets to the proper location on the stick let the transmission thoroughly warm up and recheck.
