Answer:

It could have less to do with clothes and more to do with using scissors. He might like the feeling of using the scissors like a tool. And the cut-up clothes give him the satisfaction of using that tool on something. I know a lot of kids that love to use scissors, especially if they don't usually have free access to them at home for parental/safety reasons.
I know you didn't ask for advice, but I'm gonna' give it to you anyway. When you find cut-up clothes, throw them away and don't replace them. Don't even mention this to your son. Then, when he's down to one outfit that he has to wear every day and the kids at school start to make fun of him, he'll come to you asking for new clothes. Then, you get to say no. Because you already bought him a ton of new clothes and he destroyed them. He has to learn that if he doesn't respect his things, he won't HAVE any things. I teach 6th grade right now, and I taught 5th grade for 3 years; that's right in the age group we're talking about. Another poster said that kids just like to destroy things. And it's true. I see it in the classroom all the time. The twist their scissors until they're unusable, they shave their wooden rulersthe list goes on and on. When the items finally break beyond repair they come to me for help. And guess what? I don't help them. I simply let them know that I've been watching them destroy that item for a while now, and if they're capable of destroying something then they're capable of either doing without it or replacing it. Some of them really do need to replace the items, so I let them stay after school and do some work for me to earn new items (these are school supplies and they could fail if they don't have them) and something like that might work with your son. Good luck.

Maybe he is cutting up the clothes he doesn't like so he doesn't have to wear them. Thinking back as a child I remember having clothes I couldn't stand and still had to wear them. He's found a solution to that problem. Let him start helping you pick out his clothes when you buy them. It may solve your problem. By the way most kids this age will say they don't know why they did it. They do know why just not how to explain it to you. The punishment probably isn't as bad as having to wear those items. He wouldn't cut things up that he likes.
Certainly. Lightning Rods are inexpensive and still the best way to protect your home from lightning damage, which would be far greater in dollar value than the cost of the rod.
