Well, it sounds like it is more likely baby or sport weight yarnTake a ruler and wrap the yarn around it for 2 inches, in the middle of the ruler between inch marks (wrap the yarn so it lies next to itself, but do not pull it snugly)Count the wraps in two inches and divide by 2The wraps per inch will give you an idea what weight it is20, or more wraps per inch is lace weight, 15 to 19 is baby or fingering weight, 10 to 14 is sport, 8 to 10 is DK, 6 to 9 is worsted, 4 or 5 is bulky, fewer than 4 is super bulkyIf all you want to know is what needle size to use, fold a length of the yarn in half and push the fold through the holes in a needle gaugeThe point at which the yarn fully fills the hole is the needle size it needsIf you want to make an educated guess about the fiber content, take an ash tray or other flame proof vessel, a length of the yarn and a matchLight the end of the yarn, let it burn for a moment and blow it outIf the residue is ashy and smells like burnt paper it is a plant fiber like cottonIf it is ashy and smells like burnt hair it is an animal fiber like wool or alpacaIf it ends up in a hard, plastic knob, it is an acrylic or other man-made fiber.
