Question:

how to get a sliver out?

I have a piece of wood(sliver) under my finger nail. I can‘t get to it with tweezers. Does anyone know of an old home remedy that may draw it out?

Answer:

Having been a carpenter I'm well versed on this. It's lucky that it is wood. The human body will tolerate glass and non ferrous metals pretty well and so they'll stay in there for quite a while or until medically extracted. However, the human body does not tolerate wood very well and it will soon get infected. Once infected usually the pus (dead white blood cells) will create a pressure that will try to expel the splinter. Once infected squeezing/milking the finger can help squeeze it out. Try soaking it in hot water for 20-30 minutes before the squeezing exercise. The other thing is an over the counter medicine ichthymol ointment . It is held that it has some drawing properties that may help. Other than that get ready to do your own self-surgery or go to the doctor.
I'd suggest leaving it there. You may want to try to use an extremely thin object to pry it out from the side, like a nail file.
