how to get my broken cat key out of the ignition switch?

My key broke in the backhoe ignition today and i have no idea how to get the cut part of the key out of the ignition switch my key broke in half and the caterpillar dealership sends out one of the trucks every three months but they came last month and i do not want to go and buy a new ignition switch i need to use the backhoe tomorrow and all other machines are being used tomorrow i have a 5230 excavator at the shop

Is the key metal? If so, a strong magnet might help pull it out enough for you to pull it out the rest of the way with tweezers or your fingertips. It's worked for me in the past. Good luck.

Replace the switch... it will be fairly cheap in those. You could just by-pass the switch in the mean time. Pop the ignition switch out, there should only be two wires on that type of equipment, just jump them for now. Good Luck!
