Question:

how to identify failing/broken transmission in a car?

also can transmissions be replaced from different model types of cars?

Answer:

Broken transmission : - hard to shifting ; - gear jump by itself to N ; - humming sound from transmission ; - raise of rpm not followed by raise of speed ; - oil leak ; - rough sound after oil change fit proper grade. To subtitued transmission, as long the engine type is same, the transmission just plug and play. If the engine is different, you might need to modify the transmission bolt position to the engine and the transmission mounting, but an adaptor can solve the problem except for the mounting, you need to change it. More cheap way, if the space is enough, replace the gear and final gear by your choice, but it will hard to be done even it's the cheap way, but it's possible.
