I'm considering renting a house. So I can't make any permanent changes. The house has carpet in the living room but not the bedrooms. I would like to install some carpet in the bedrooms, but someone told me I would have to glue it down. Is there a way to install carpet without having any effect on the real wood floors beneath?
Carpet won't be glued onto the wood floors; rather it's tacked on. But if it's removed, the floor will show holes from the tacks. As a big fan of wood floors, I suggest you appreciate them and keep them---just use area rugs in the bedroom.

There is a good chance the carpet will damage the floor, unfortunately. Also, having the floor covered, if you spill onto the carpet, it will soak into the wood and you cannot dry it. You could ask the landlord if you can buy carpet and see what they say, but they probably spent too much on the floors to let you ruin them. You can get a non slip mat and area rug for the bedroom. Check under it periodically to make sure the mat does not stick to the floor. I 've heard of this happening with cheap mats, and the mat basically glues onto the floor, so you end up having to get the floor refinished.
You can loose lay a carpet over the wood but w/o a special mat under the carpet it will still ruin the wood. In your case your best off to invest in some area rugs and still use this mat that allows the wood to breathe and keeps the rug from bunching and slipping. When you move your area rug goes with you. Loose lay carpet , you can have the edges bound to keep it from fraying.but this special mat is still needed to keep the rough action back from scratching the wood and to not stain it.
