Question:

how to lift something very heavy with nothing above it?

specifically, two logs joined in a A frame, I have nothing above them to hook my come along to, and the only jack I have is for my car (lifts about a foot) so how can I bring this A frame upright?

Answer:

You could tie a rope to the top of the 'A' frame, then pass it up and over a prop, and down to an anchor point, where the come-along is attached. Then a slow process of jacking and re-propping will eventually get it upright.
Put something to stop both of the A frame leg. Make sure it is strong enough, or dig a hole about 1 feet at its legs. Then jack the top end with your car jack. Then, using car towing cable or chain (NO ORDINARY ROPE ok?) attach it to your car or truck, pull slowly. Pull toward its leg. when it is about to vertical position. Stop ur car and make a support to make sure that frame could stay vertical. How heavy is that A frame anyway?
Tom read my answer very carefully, what you are doing is very dangerous and i have done a lot impossible things like this in the past. first, most rope you buy now is polypropylene (sp) and it has no strength to it. if you can not get nylon, use chain or steel cable for your safety and those around you. first, to raise an A frame, you have to have rope that is above the frame. you are able to get the rope above the frame by using a pole on a hinge to allow it to be in a partial upright position and as you pull the rope, chain or steel cable, it pulls the A frame up. you need to put stops on the frame and you need to some how anchor that frame so that it moves up to vertical but not beyond. i suggest a hand wench, you can get a decent one for under 30 dollars. use a come a-long to start the process or your car, but do it slow, do it easy look up on the net, raising wind turbines and you will see video of what i'm talking about STAY AWAY FROM POLYPROPYLENE AT ALL COSTS, IT WILL SNAP WITH ANY LOAD ON IT WITH DEADLY RESULTS email me and with an email address and i will send you a pdf drawing of what i'm talking about
