I'm trying to figure out how to make one of those carpet things cats climb on. i have extra carpet and want to make one for my cat.
First of all you need some wood and some long nails and a hammer and a staple gun. Take a large flat piece of wood and use as a base. Wrap the carpet around it and staple the carpet on the bottom of the wood. Depending on high you want to make your carpeted climber for your cat, take two pieces of 2 x 4's and nail them together. Wrap the carpet around them and staple gun the ends together and make sure after they are stapled together, that you pound the staples in good and deep so that they don't catch on the cat's claws. Then taking long nails nail the one end onto the base. Note, the end of the 2x4's shouldn't have carpet on it, just bare wood. Do the same for the perch as you did for the base. The cat will love to climb up and down and you can play with your cat with bungie type of toys too. However don't let bungie toys left unattended. Cats and kittens can get too rough with them and they could end of strangling themselves with these toys when you are not present with them. Not sure what you consider low cost...I've never seen any that I thought was reasonable. Quite a while back, someone posted a link to instructions for building your own. I'm sure you can google that if you're interested. I do have a suggestion about building your own, though. I don't have room or I would be doing this. One idea I saw on Trash to Treasure on Decorating Cents. Take an old desk, remove the drawers, remove some or all of the wood that is under the drawers so that you basically have a desk with drawer holes but empty space inside. Or perhaps you could cut holes in them and put them back....then cover the openings with some sheer fabric, and viola! you have a cool cat tree for next to nothing. The other idea I came up with on my own was to build a staircase. Or better yet, a ramp. Use a tape measure to determine how much wood you'll need - prop it against the wall at a reasonable angle and note the length. (6ft I think was the figure I came up with. Then get a piece of cheap wood in that length - or you could get two pieces and secure them together with L brackets or something like that. Make sure it's at least 1/2 thick or more - you don't want it to get bouncy. Carpet it, and viola again! You have a cat ramp. Be sure to secure it to the wall and/or floor. You could add a ledge at the top - just cut a hole in it so the cats can get onto it.
Hi. First get a 2 x 4 or a bit larger, then, you want to go to a carpet store, and ask if they have any remnant's left over. Take the remnants, and use a staple gun to attach the carpet to the wood. After wards, you can attach this to your wall. I have done this, and it works great.
Try Plywood and even some strong cardboard tubing, try to stay away from Shag carpeting, or loose knit.....otherwise, you will be picking up loose carpet, or the Cats will eat them....not good for the inside organs of your baby. Remember to balance the seating if you are making a multilevel condo.
