It will depend on the kind of cakeIs it frosted? Most frosting protect the cake from becoming hardI would cover it, after it cools, with a large bowl or plastic container if it is a layer cakeIf you have baked it in a 9 by 13 pan then cover the cooled cake with plastic wrap or aluminum foil.
