I want to remove chair rail from my hall and reuse in a bathroom .Sugesstions welcome.
very carefully, it probable has not only glue but also nails, but with a little time and patience you should be able to save it
you can get chair rail for around a buck a foot - is it worth the trouble to remove it?
Assuming you have enough to cover the bathroom, I'd carefully remove the chair rail and put it in the bathroom. If you're going to paint the chair railing, them you can avoid breaking during removal by using a hole punch and driving the finishing nails on through. Then the railing won't be damaged by hammer to pry bar damage. Once you put it up in the bath, fill the holes with filler, sand and paint.....before you remove railing, make sure you have enough for the bath, and don't forget to allow for the possibility of having to make opposite angle cuts to reinstall. Good luck
Chair rails are almost always nailed up. Look very carefully at the chair rail to see if you can notice any indentations from the nails that it was installed with. They're most likely where the studs in the wall are ... with a center point every 16 inches. When you've located them, use a thin pry bar and try to pry the wood (from the bottom side) away from the wall. Use the pry bar on the bottom because it will probably mark the wood and it will be less noticeable later when you reinstall it in the bathroom. You'd probably be better off just buying new railing ... it's not that expensive per foot and you won't have to worry about chipping or nicking it with the pry bar.
