Question:

Huge piece of quartz-how much is it worth?

I found a large piece of quartz near a wooded area of my suburban neighborhood. It is a cubic shape, roughly 7.5 by 7 by 7 inches. As far as I can tell, it is pure quartz. It was found in the Piedmont region of north carolina. Can anyone tell me how much it is worth?

Answer:

They are not the same stone. Neither are particularly precious stones, so I don't think it's really going to effect the price of your bids, but they are still not the same stone.
Quartz is silicon dioxide and is likely to be more opaque than transparent. It's also the most common 'stone' on the planet. Topaz is fluor with aluminium silicate, and is more likely to be semi-transparent in a large variety of colours, even the smokey one. As the first answerer said, both are common in jewellery and not particularly precious. It's not possible to identify positively from a description - a jeweller might be able to look and help you.
