Forget that explanation. It is just a lot of nonsense. Also the inertial mass of the object does increase. There is abundant experimental proof of this and probably any introductory text on special relativity will describe at least one such experiment. I would recommend Special Relativity by AP French ( n MIT book) which I am looking at right now and which describes such an experiment done with electrons. If you need some sort of explanation you might consider stating the fact that energy is equivalent to mass as Einstein pointed out with E mc^2 (or m E/c^2). Suppose you pump some energy into an electron, for example, to get it moving, this mass equivalent for the energy will now be reflected as a greater mass for the electron and effect the way, for example, it is affected by a magnetic field. This is one of the experimental methods used to measure that increase in mass. The speed of light is not a way to measure the curvature of space. Observing the change in position of a star, for example, when it's light travels close to the sun is a way to do that and this has been done.
I think it depends on what you are up against. When you are against something tough you will want a shield for higher armor rating, better defense and more bashing effects. If you have an enchanted shield you will also get those effects. The downside is that you have to one-hand a weapon or magic, which is obviously weaker than dual-wielding. If you are up against something that isn't too tough or can't reach you I would definitely stick with the dual-wield, but when you need protection a shield is a good call, and as the soldiers say, The best offense is a good defense, am I right? Change up your strategy according to what you are facing.
