Question:

I am pregnant, and am supposed to take an iron pill?

is ferrous Gluconate which is an iron supplement equal to 27mg of iron safe to take?

Answer:

Why aren't you taking a standard prenatal vitamin which has iron in it? They are available at all pharmacies. I would not take anything else unless ordered specifically by your doctor or you discuss it with the pharmacist. Too much or too little of many vitamins can cause birth defects. This is far too important to take lightly. Pick up the phone and ask. Good luck and God bless you and the baby!

Typical iron pills have 324 mg of iron and are called ferrous sulfate Ferrous gluconate is more gentle on stomach, (iron can cause stomach upset) Ask Doctor which form of iron is right for you. Most Doctors do prescribe iron during pregnancy, but too much iron can be dangerous so be sure to get instruction from Doctor, each person is different.
You are supposed to take iron during pregnancy to prevent an anemia. The dose to prevent anemia is usually what the prenatal multivitamins content. If the doctor told you to take additional iron is probably because you already have anemia and he wants to resolve it.
