Answer:

First off what the others here are saying is so right bec many have problems diagnosing such problems are basically use a list of known faults to tell the customer what is faulty when actually it's not faulty at allYou need to see if any of the rubber mounts you can spot from under the car have either rodded or warn out , bec many times common rubber mounts used in the the front end or frame support or suspension are causing such faultsOne main check you can do here is to switch the gear shifter as the engine is idling and see if the engine seems to jump or jerk too much bec really the engine shouldnt move much when shifting gears, plus see once you kick the transmission into gear if the car jerks forward or jumps even though brake pedal down fullyIf the engine moves too much when changing gears then engine mounts are faulty and you must dettermine witch one is at fault by the extra engine play movements.Plus if the transmission mount shot the car will jerk or jump even when brake pedal pushed down solidIf you can get it to a shop and have a free check done as car is running having someone changing gears and check to see where the popping noises are coming from and what mounts might be affected by performing a full mount test as car is up in air and solidly sitting on the ground tooBy the way it's highly likely if that aged vehicle has been driven a lot spot and go dailly runs or city driven or with a aggressive driver or even due to normal wear and tear due to high mileage that the vehicle would have more then just one faulty frame mount or suspension mount or engine mount Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way the pressure of the engine going into gear is what's causing the affected mount to move so much that the thing makes the popping noises, plus tensions on certain gears or moving parts can cause such noises too.
