The short answer is fiberYou can get fiber from fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grainsEating a piece of white bread won't do it because the bran (outer layer of the grain) was removed before grinding it into that pretty, white, useless flourWhole grains, however, have the outer bran layer left on, and that's where the fiber is foundTry whole grain (good) or bran (better, but nasty) cerealsAlso, some fruits and vegetables have more fiber than othersAn apple a day keeps the doctor away in part because it contains a good amount of fiberThat's whole apples, not apple sauce or apple juiceAlso try carrots, zucchini, cucumbers, pears, strawberries, nuts and seedsThere are two kinds of fiber - soluble and insolubleBoth are good for you, but for different reasonsSoluble fiber dissolves partially and it helps to lower bad cholesterolInsoluble fiber does not dissolve and it bulks up the stool, easing constipation You should increase your fiber intake, concentrating especially on oat bran and wheat bran (they're more effective for preventing constipation than the fiber in fruits and vegetables)Don't suddenly start eating five bran muffins a day, though - you digestive system will not thank youGradually increase your fiber intakeIt is important to increase the amount of water you drink, too, because fiber absorbs water Increased fiber is perfectly safe for pregnant womenIf you like rhubarb, it is a natural laxativeIn reasonable amounts (say, two pieces of pie) it might help you with the constipation, and still be safe.
