Question:

I has a chunk of Quartz just about smaller than my fist, are there any cool things i can do with it? grow it?

The Quartz is clear towards the edges, and becomes a faded pink as you get towards the center, the darkest part (being about the size of a dime) is somewhere between a faded purple/pink. What can i do with it? Piezo-electrics? Grow it? Name it and make it a constant companion?

Answer:

moisture, get it hot or pre heat it
Sounds like microscopic cracks. I would assume you are cooling it too fast and you did not heat the glass tube evenly enough. Ideally there should be a slow but even gradient along the piece and not just a small section of really hot material. You might fix it by heating the cracked section close to the melting point again and then slowly removing it from the flame. Quartz, once molten, is not a crystal but a glass.
