Question:

how can you tell if your computer has a memory card reader?

I have a compaq presario nb.(raising my hand) computer idiot here.

Answer:

i have never heard of a memory card reader. all computers have memory sticks. just open up your computer and you will see them.
Memory Card readers (for such devices as digital cameras, mp3 players, etc) come in many standards. Most modern computers have USB ports on both the front and back of the basic unit. These are the rectangular ports that have the three-pronged USB symbol on them. Some computers have flash card readers on them as well. The ones I've seen are located on the front of the case, sometimes behind an access panel. I've included a few links below to show you what these things look like.
If you mean a digital camera memory card, there will be a slot in the front of the computer that the card fits in. Best way: Open MY COMPUTER and look at the drives listed. A card reader will be a higher letter than C: and will say Removable Drive
I'm assuming you mean a memory card, like from a digital camera. If that is what you are talking about, you have 2 choices. First, you may have a special slot built in to your computer to insert the memory card. If not, and you have at least 1 USB port, you can buy a converter in to which you insert the card and then insert into your USB port. The converter costs like, $10, at Staples or an Office Depot.
You didnt give us the model number of your notebook. However, some notebooks now are coming out with card readers built in. (I am currently using a Medion MD42200 that has a multi card card reader built into the side of the machine) If your notebook has them they will be located on either the sides or the front of the unit. Look for slots that would fit a CF card or SD or Memory stick. If you cant find them, check the user manual for the notebook,. This will show you what ports and connections you have on your notebook as well as show you a picture of where they are located.
