Question:

I Have A Tempstar Gas Funace. Someone Said The Heat Exchanger Dropped Is This Dangerous?

I Have A Tempstar Gas Furnace A Guy Was Looking At It One Day And Told Me The Heat Exchanger Had Dropped Is This Dangerous Or Can It Be Fixed Easily?

Answer:

ive never heard of that happening. theres no room for that to happen. maybe it was the secondary exchanger which could i guess if all 5 or 6 screws were taken out. if that was his term for a cracked exchanger, change the furnace, its not worth replacing the exchanger.
It sounds very dangerous indeed. The heat exchanger works like this: The flame makes hot air which is dangerous, containing carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The hot air is passed through a series of steel tubes, and house air is blown between these hot tubes, picking up heat before being routed back into the main house. The exchanger is supposed to exchange heat, but not mix combustion air with room air. The heat (and water produced during combustion) cause the exchanger eventually to rust, and when it begins to leak, it becomes deadly. I'd respectfully suggest getting a carbon monoxide detector immediately, and also get a licensed HVAC contractor to look at it very soon.
