Keep walking. DON'T pick it up with gloves, needles go through gloves. DON'T throw it in the garbage, you'll infect the public works employee or one of our independent recyclers. Neither you or your dog are equipped to handle infectious materials. No good deed goes unpunished; is it really worth catching AIDs or getting hit by a bus to pick up after some junky? Just pick up after your dog and make sure to throw it away; leaving that blue baggie on the ground is no less ridiculous than leaving a syringe.
Safefly remove it and dump it in a medical waste container. Better to get it out of the street before someone else takes it or huts themselves with it. Its probably not heroin considering you have to melt it before its injected and then use it so it won't solidify. It may be insulin or glucose or some other drug.
You probably should have thrown this in the trash - preferable inside a soda bottle or soda can. You will not get any disease but now someone else might accidentally step on this. This could have been something as innocent is a diabetic person who opened their purse and this is a clean needle that fell out.
The fire extinguishers are getting our of their jumpseats and giving instructions to passengers. They are probably also communicating with the flight crew. Flight attendants fight the fires. There are a number of standard hand held fire extinguishers on board either filled with halon or with water depending on where they are located.
I have given safety training courses on blood borne pathogens for my company many times and most of what is being said here is true. If you do pick it up you need to dispose of it in a sharps receptacle which are red and can be found in most bathrooms these days. Gloves are an exceptable means of picking up needles if handled carefully. Just make sure to pick it up by the plunger and when taking off the gloves make sure to grab at the wrist and turn them inside out so that you are not exposing yourself when taking them off.
