i have the complete wiring harness for my craftsman lawn mower. i have the ignition switch and all kids of wires that im pretty sure i dont need i just need/want it to start it and kill it.i need to know what wiring i need to use just for the ignition switch and if i am going to have to bypass other wiresit is an upright motor the flywheel is already on it i just need to know how to get power to the starter and to be able to use my key switch i plan on putting it on my go cart so i dont need half the wires on the wire harness.
You're probably better off just running your own wires, if you want to use the existing wires then usually the keyswitch has one or two 'accessories' lines for lights, etcjust leave them unhooked. I can't help with the actual diagram, if you know the wire colors for the wires going to the starter that will help. Do you also have a starter relay? If it existed then it should be still wiredit may have a terminal that needs to be touching ground to work. Other than thatit's up to what you have documented (notes?) as to where everything was originally wired. Good Luck.
The air gap is not a critical measurement so long as there is a gap. With the magnets adjacent to the coil the gap should be set. I don't think that you can install the coil upside down or at least you can't on my Kohler engine. You did not mess up the timing. You would have to remove the flywheel to effect the timing. I would check the spark with the new coil. If you are not getting spark, disconnect the ground wire from the coil and try it again. Most often when a coil is bad they quit completly when they get hot not just make the engine run bad. You could be working on the wrong problem. The first thing to do is determine if you have spark with the new coil.
Look on the back of the key switch The prongs should be marked with letters. You need to look closely to see them. The one marked B is the hot wire strait from the battery The one marked S goes to the solenoid. The one marked G is a ground just ground it to the frame some where. The one marked M is hooked to the kill wire coming from the motor. The one marked L goes to the charge wire but you can also omit this and run the charge wire strait to the battery.
