Question:

what is proper way to install cement siding.?

i hire a contractor to replace and removed the old siding form my house. i have seen siding install before and there is normally an woord frame or plywood that is underneat the siding. the contractor stated that is no needed. and based on that he refused to continue with the work. i then proceeded to put a stop payment on the downpayment what are my options now! can i hired someone else to do the work without bein held liable for his expenses?

Answer:

you do not need ply wood only a breather type paper barrier and all is well. Have you read up on the specs for the product. You have a problem with the contractor though. Self professed home experts are the worst . They seem to know better than an experienced contractor. You have some aplogising to do. I hope he accepts it . you are liable
he removed the old siding and found no wall sheathing? ( plywood) and then started to install new hardiplank? so he just put back like it was before but with diff. type of material... hmmm, unless it was stated in the contract that he was to bring the exterior up to code then, ur in the wrong.....now, u can go after him by reading up on the material, hardiplank, and see if it states that there must be a solid backing or wall sheathing under the siding! if so u got him there for wrongful installation...... either way he should have told u when he found no sheathing under the old siding what was going on....how old is the house and where do u live ( state).....email me for more help.... lic. gen. contractor
if you install cement siding you DO NOT need plywood behind it, all you need is roofing felt for a moisture barrier, the siding is attach to your studs,i finish my house and garage with hardie board siding and it looks great, you might call that contractor and apologize, good luck.
