I'm not sure where you live, but I am surrounded by all sorts of people from different culturesKids need to learn that everyone should be valued and respectedI didn't say acceptedIf there is someone or something you don't like, you don't have to approve of it or participate, but you'd better afford them the same rights you haveIt's not about being PC; it's about learning to get along in a more and more diverse culture.
The thing is, and this is my opinion, that for the longest time, our education system has ignored the needs and/or the histories of certain cultural groups in this countryIts not about being politically correct, its about starting to overturn 200 years of bigotry and finally teach our kids that we may all be different, but we can all get alongIt may sound wishy washy and philosphical, but you asked for non-blanket statements and this is my answer.
Your question really only allows for blanket staementsJust by reading the replies I can see there isn't even a common agreement on what political correctness isIt seems to basically be whatever policy I don't like You need to get away from the buzz words, which just make us all dumber, and discuss the issues themselves on their own meritsIf you don't like certain things being taught in the school, you can home school, you can protest to the school board, or you can ask that your child be excused on the day of instruction in the offensive subject You could also talk (not shout) to some of the people who support the politically correct positions you dislikeYou might not change each other's minds, but at least you both might see where the other is coming fromFor example, in my office some people are mad because the office party in december is called a holiday party instead of a christmas partyWell, to them it is political correctness, but there are several Jews, a couple of atheists, and some other religions in my office Would these same critics feel okay if we called it a hannukah party or a susperstition day party? Another example: in my office this one guy complains about feminists and their PC ways, but then he goes out of his way to make offensive comments, which virtually garentees more PC rules and complaintsAll I'm saying is that while being PC can be taken too far, there usually is a reason behind it, and you have to look at each situation seperately.
