Question:

I need help removing carpet odours.?

I need help removing odours from our carpet. We're renting at the moment and the carpet was pretty grubby when we moved in but we've cleaned it up a fair bit with a wet/dry vaccuum cleaner. We've had a litter of puppies recently though and as puppies do, they've had a few accidents on the carpet. The carpet now has a urine smell in it and I'm trying to get rid of it but not sure what to use. I've tried using teatree/eucalyptus oil, and a few carpet cleaners. They work removing the stains but not the smell. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:

Here is a site that I would highly recommend. They have very high quality stain removal techniques. I would suggest repeating the process after the first application, and rinsing the rug out with cool water in between applications. Best of luck!

I really hate to say it but with urine, you are in for the long haul and will eventually rip the carpet up. I have tried everything. I don't know why urine is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO incredibly pervasive but it won't go away. You can steam clean the spots up, but the urine is way, way down at the floor line, and when the cleaning water begins to dry up, the reconstituted urine will simply wick back through the carpet fibers and start the whole process over again. OTC remedies are a waste of money and DO NOT work.
Replace the carpet. Nothing will ever get all the odor or urine out. It's soaked through to the pad and possibly the concrete under that. You might think about painting a sealant on the concrete after you take up the ruined carpet and pad. Before putting down new carpet. That odor can seep back up from the concrete (or wood) subfloor for years to come. Every time it rains or is damp outside, you very likely will smell it again. Better yet, put down wood laminate or something instead of more carpet.
I know for spot cleaning, vinegar is your best bet. It freshens the carpet, gets rid of the stain, and eliminates the odors. But if it is a widespread area...well...that's a lot of vinegar, but it may be an option. Or You could sprinkle baking soda all over the carpet and let it sit overnight and vacuum it up. Baking soda absorbs odors, but if the urine is still in the carpet, it won't work (and you have too keep all of the animals off the carpet because eating baking soda isn't good for them. Try the vinegar first. When it dries you can use the baking soda. A cut up onion in a bowl of water overnight will help odors too. I wish you luck!
